Hi, We’re Cooper’s Parents…
Most people at Lake Pointe RV and Condo Resort know Cooper, our friendly rescued German Shepherd. They may not know us but they know Cooper! We take twice daily walks around the park 365 days a year. It is fascinating to see how everything changes with the seasons and the rising and falling of the water levels of Canyon Lake.
New Trails Revealed
This spring the lake is down over 20 feet so brand-new trails are emerging from places that used to be underwater. We’ve been hiking Tabitha’s Landing of late, which is behind the condos on the northwest edge of what was once lakefront. What a treasure! As you get to the place where the lake’s edge used to be, an old winding country road (Old Hancock Road) has reappeared and you start to get a feel for what this area looked like back in the 1960’s before the dam was built and the lake filled up. Other than the crunch of zebra mussel shells underfoot you would never guess that just a year ago we were kayaking in this exact spot.
A Garden of Wildflowers
The dry lakebed is now covered with a dazzling variety of wildflowers. It starts with a yellow carpet of perky Sue. Its botanical name is tetraneuris scaposa or Four-Nerve Daisy, but I much prefer perky Sue. Red and yellow Indian blankets and buttercups add to this bright canopy along with the showy red Texas paintbrush. White antelope horn, prickly poppies, and anemone contrast against the pink winecups and primrose. But my favorite is the purple thistle standing tall above them all. It is a butterfly garden to rival the carefully curated one at the wonderful Tye Preston Library, just down the road near Canyon Lake Dam, and provides a happy hunting ground for my grandsons, who love finding caterpillars.
Fawning Season Approaches
On our way back home, I spot several of the many deer who share our home and I can tell that fawning season is soon to be upon us. From the look of several bulging bellies, I’m guessing we have several pair of twins on the way. Something to watch for on our walks over the next few weeks!
Jeanne and her husband Bob started sailing on Canyon Lake in 2000 after moving to Texas from Minnesota. They fell in love with the area and in 2014 Lake Pointe Resort became their weekend getaway in a newly purchased RV. Exploring the lake by kayak and jet boat, and the surrounding hill country on foot and by motorcycle was a much needed break from owning and managing a retirement community in San Antonio. When Covid hit and the world went crazy, they sold everything, and embraced minimalism. The RV became home and Lake Pointe their neighborhood. They have never looked back!
